MTT 186 / Breathe Life

An electro, IDM, and ambient grab-bag, all at around 120. New(ish) tracks from Pearson Sound and Scape One plus some old favorites.

Scape One‘s Hyperbolix is (relatively) new, released in February on the album Cosmic Trax through Mr. Baggaley’s bandcamp. I played the first track off it a couple months ago, one of the Jive Rhythm Trax tributes. Hyperbolix is more moody than those tributes, more in line with what the album sounds like as a whole.

The other new song this week is Pearson Sound‘s Everything Is Inside Out from his Alien Mode EP. I played the A side of this two weeks ago, and am really glad to get to this track (B2) now. It’s a genre-bending piece, as much techno or breaks or IDM as it is anything else. The kicks are arranged in the same pattern as the second half of the Numbers rhythm, there’s no snare or strong accent on 2, I dunno, it’s weird. And weird in this case is good.

There’s lots more to recommend here: Shadowbunny is awesome, Ivna Ji’s Laax EP is one of my favorite things of the last couple of years, even an old semi-forgotten tracker mod in Aliensex by Kaiowa. But I feel like moving on. I’ll be back next week with something slower, as usual.

MTT 185 / Like Shadows

Electro, IDM, and one odd breaks track, all at around 128. A little cryptic, distant, faded.

This show can be heard it aNONradio’s archives here: https://archives.anonradio.net/202009110600_cev.mp3, and at mixcloud here: https://www.mixcloud.com/djcev/mtt-185-like-shadows/.

Tracklist:

  1. Obergman / Synchronicity 00:00
  2. Holger Flinsch / Abak 01:35
  3. Metamatics / Liquid Gel 04:00
  4. Creta Kano / Skyway Motel 07:48
  5. Legowelt / Shadows In The Street Life 11:37
  6. Transparent Sound / What Goes On? 16:18
  7. VC-118A / Protocol 20:48
  8. Low Orbit Satellite / Hostile Manoeuvres 23:07
  9. Lok44 / Flaix 28:07
  10. Anthony Rother / Medium 31:22
  11. Electroberlin / The End 37:07
  12. Silicon Scally / Coast To Coast 39:22
  13. Jon Convex / Radar 44:37
  14. Rude 66 / Overkill (Vocoder Mix) 48:46
  15. Identity Unknown / Wasp 47 52:25
  16. Plastikman / Mind In Rewind 55:27

The marquee track of this selection is without a doubt Legowelt‘s Shadows In The Street Life from his album Pancakes With Mist. I’ve been waiting to play it for a month or more now. An electro anthem, the kind I find only every few years. Mixes well with Skyway Motel, too, which is pretty cool.

Another thing to mention is that Rude 66’s classic Overkill is playing at -6% in this mix. On second listen it sounds a bit off, a bit wrong, though to some extent that was my intention. Maybe it would have been better a little slower. Check the link above to hear Overkill at its original speed if you’re unfamiliar with it.

I’m happy with this. We’ve been having a, ah, weather event where I am in Oregon and the music choices this hour reflect that. The performance could be better, there are some annoying unfinished edges in the mix, but I’m always going to say that. Oh, and my little vocal intro wasn’t archived correctly, but that’s OK.

I’ll be back next week with something slower.

MTT 184 / Not Lost

Breaks, electro, IDM, and a little future garage, all at a bit less than half the tempo of last week’s show. This hour features new(ish) music by Andy Garvey, Client_03, and Pearson Sound.

A recording of this show is available in aNONradio’s archives here: https://archives.anonradio.net/202009040600_cev.mp3, and at mixcloud here: https://www.mixcloud.com/djcev/mtt-184-not-lost/.

Tracklist:

  1. Reedale Rise / 4th State 00:00
  2. Sepehr / Thinking Of You 03:53
  3. Silicon Scally / Triggered 08:14
  4. Aloka / Convex 13:14
  5. Client_03 / Personality Converter 16:33
  6. Andy Garvey / Mind Games 20:06
  7. Chris Randall / Stylus 22:35
  8. Azaleh / Revenant 25:39
  9. Sorrow / Up & Down 28:22
  10. Hajimari / Overnight 31:04
  11. Rings Around Saturn / Perfect Crime 33:53
  12. RAC / Instinct 37:39
  13. Ed Chamberlain / Somefind 41:39
  14. Pearson Sound / Alien Mode 45:25
  15. Low Orbit Satellite / Objects In Space 50:28
  16. Bola / Vespers 58:02

The first release I’d like to highlight in this is Pearson Sound‘s Alien Mode EP, released a couple of months ago on the great Hessle Audio. I like the title track Alien Mode a lot, a breaks workout with some fun vocal distortion (timestretching?). It shows up here near the end of the hour. There’s a very good tune on the B-side of the EP too which I’ll probably play in a few weeks.

Immediately after Alien Mode is Low Orbit Satellite‘s Objects In Space from their album Objects In Space. I spent an afternoon about six months ago going through the releases on Low Orbit Satellite’s bandcamp, and I think Objects In Space is my favorite. It’s four strong trancey electro tracks and one ambient dub techno track, very much my thing.

Tracks 7 through 10 form a little future garage segment. I don’t know much about the style and only have a few tracks (most of it sounds like Burial’s Untrue to me) but I enjoy it and it’s fun to play every now and then. Mixing future garage is a challenge, one I haven’t practiced much, so that segment is maybe a little rocky.

That’s all the commentary for #184 I have in me. I’ll be back next week with something slower, returning to my usual trend of reducing tempo through the month.

MTT 179 / Dance Around The Center

100 BPM grab bag. Beats and pieces. A new track from Legowelt and mishmash of stuff I’ve been listening to this month.

This mix is available in the aNONradio archives here: https://archives.anonradio.net/202007310600_cev.mp3, and at mixcloud here: https://www.mixcloud.com/djcev/mtt-179-dance-around-the-center/.

Tracklist:

  1. The War Against The Sun / Anti Photon Battery 00:00
  2. Legowelt / Under A Golden Dome 04:49
  3. Aphex Twin / Ageispolis 08:27
  4. The Darkvoid Project / 1986 11:18
  5. Ian o’Brien / Homeless 15:26
  6. Bryan Zentz / Krooks & Snakes 19:56
  7. Gottfried Y. Leibniz / Twofoldness 22:30
  8. Prodamkey / Purple Beat 25:21
  9. User48736353001 / 20 Pink Floyd 28:41
  10. Electric Sheep / You Never Know (Live) 31:22
  11. The Aesthetics / Slam 34:23
  12. Secret Frequency Crew / Gold 36:12
  13. Chris Randall / Mitte (Baseck Remix) 39:45
  14. Being / Gonk 42:27
  15. DJ Food / Dark Lady (Skint Mix) 46:00
  16. Mike Ash / Our Universe 49:11
  17. Neuroactive / Vapour (Inflammable Mix) 52:56
  18. Duran Duran / Save A Prayer (Anodyne Remix) 55:58
  19. Portland / The Return Of Richard Belmont 58:40

I featured Legowelt near the beginning of the show again this week, with a track from his new album Pancakes With Mist. The release of Pancakes somehow slipped by me, or I’d have played Shadows In The Street Life weeks ago. It’s very good (I like it anyway) and currently listed as name-your-price, so go check it out.

The Duran Duran remix at the end of this hour is of course from MASK 500. The copy I have, the copy that’s played here, is the 2009 bootleg. I’ve both played and written about it before, and I’m sure I will again. Might be worth writing up a post dedicated to it.

I didn’t leave myself enough time to read the tracklist out loud at the end of this show, unfortunately. Sorry to the folks who got left out. I don’t have too much more to say about this one; it was fine. The last 20 minutes are particularly good, I think.

Thanks to everybody out there listening. I’ll be back next week to continue my tradition of playing bass music in August, so prepare yourself for at least two weeks of Miami Bass.

MTT 170 / Tranquil Passage

90 BPM beats and pieces for the end of May. A few long songs, a few short ones.

A recording of this show can be found in aNONradio’s archives: https://archives.anonradio.net/202005290600_cev.mp3 , and at mixcloud: https://www.mixcloud.com/djcev/mtt-170-tranquil-passage .

Tracklist:

  1. Tiger / AW 1 00:00
  2. F.O.T.N. / The Dwelling Of The Day 02:51
  3. FUSE / New Day 06:50
  4. DJ Shadow / Lost & Found (S.F.L.) 09:40
  5. Luke Vibert / Space Race 13:59
  6. Low Orbit Satellite / High Performance Jets 19:52
  7. Bjorn Rohde / Drop Into Space 25:45
  8. Hong Kong Express / Dreaming 27:39
  9. Salmz / Nibiru Kids 32:11
  10. The Aesthetics / Abstract Living 36:21
  11. Legowelt / Your Life Goals Are Slowly Slipping Away 37:44
  12. Michna / Levitation 40:05
  13. Higher Intelligence Agency / Skank 44:08
  14. Telescope ft. Noelle Poeller / Nobile 48:18
  15. The Crystal Method / High Roller 52:09
  16. Bola / Zephyr (Pentagon) 56:55

I picked up Low Orbit Satellite‘s two track Shuttle Dubs release last week and it’s been on rotation here since. High Performance Jets, included in this mix, is the longer of the two tracks, and is a cool mixture of space-y dub techno and chunky beats. I really like the combination of elements and variety of tempos that Low Orbit Satellite works with.

Another album I’d like to promote this week is Legowelt’s recent Tips For Life. It’s represented in this mix through track #11 Your Life Goals Are Slowly Slipping Away, which will probably sound familiar to everybody who caught Legowelt’s set for the 2020 IFM Festival over the weekend. Tips For Life is significant to me because it includes Arcade Breeze (Living In The Rain), from Legowelt’s first Memphis Rap Mix. I’ve wanted a copy of that track for a long time, and as a DJ who primarily plays at an arcade in Oregon, the name couldn’t be more fitting. Tips is listed as name-your-price, so be sure to check it out.

Other than that, this is a tying-up-loose-ends episode. I’ve wanted to play both Skank by Higher Intelligence Agency and High Roller by The Crystal Method for years, and this felt like the right moment. I’ll be back next week Friday 06:00 UTC on aNONradio to continue my monthly routine with another fast show. (Probably ~135 BPM again).

MTT 166 / Relative Distance

A 110 BPM grab bag episode this time. I wanted to play Dave Angel’s Latin Lover and How I Missed You by Clatterbox and worked backward from there.

A recording of this show can be found in aNONradio’s archives: https://archives.anonradio.net/202005010600_cev.mp3 , and at mixcloud: https://www.mixcloud.com/djcev/mtt-166-relative-distance/ .

Tracklist:

  1. Mrs Jynx / Diving Loop 00:00
  2. The Pad Foundation / The Last Stand 03:03
  3. Gottfried Y. Leibniz / Leibniz’ Vierspeziesrechenmaschine 06:11
  4. Clatterbox / How I Missed You [It Catches My Heart In It’s Hands] 09:52
  5. Darkhalo / Manga Starlight 14:11
  6. Jean-Paul Bondy ft. Carl Finlow / Cold Reformer 17:38
  7. Axiom 23 / Higher Communication (Hyper Script) 21:08
  8. Bola / Sirasancerre 25:12
  9. Boards Of Canada / Pete Standing Alone 26:57
  10. Lawb / Sdhkvjeesus 31:34
  11. Clatterbox / Hard Cell [Long Distance Voice Mail] 33:35
  12. Drox / Aquanerve 37:04
  13. Skatebård / Celluloid Mirage 40:18
  14. Fluke / Mosh 43:13
  15. Enertia-sound / Lutron 48:36
  16. Dave Angel / Latin Lover 51:21
  17. FSOL / Hot Knives 55:40
  18. Legowelt / Cherri Meets The Professor 58:10

Track #16 Latin Lover by Dave Angel is from the first 2004 Ghost In The Shell tribute album. I said my piece about those two tribute albums in the show notes to MTT158, so go check that out. Latin Lover is the one slow track on that first tribute album, and is excellent, worth dropping out of Lutron for.

Project Unison by Metamatics and Clatterbox features twice in this hour, as track #4 How I Missed You and #11 Hard Cell. Project Unison was released twice, first on Neo Ouija and then on Hydrogen Dukebox. The two releases have the same content although the tracklists appear different. I own the Neo Ouija neo02lp version of the album, so I’ve used those titles above. The hyperlinks lead to Hydrogen Dukebox’s bandcamp however, so I’ve included the Dukebox titles in brackets. Anyway, that’s a very pretty IDM album, probably my favorite work by both Clatterbox and Metamatics.

This is the second week in a row Carl Finlow‘s vocals have appeared. Last week it was Out Of Time from Electrilogy+, this week it’s Jean-Paul Bondy‘s great Cold Reformer. Bondy is better known to me as Volum and one half of Volsoc. Cold Reformer is on a fun, varied album called The Path Of Most Resistors from 2006. I’ve been quietly playing tracks off it over the last few years; it’s worth a listen and is available at junodownload.

And that’s all the commentary I have in me today. I’ll be back with some electro next time, I think.

MTT 163 / Into Traffic

Some rowdy breaks, electro, and IDM at 135.

Tracklist:

  1. Schizophrenia / Schizophrenia 00:00
  2. Ambit 3 / Dropped 02:11
  3. RAC / Quexos 05:08
  4. Anoesis / Swift 09:22
  5. Electronic Corporation / We Got Velocity 11:44
  6. Kerr Knoll / Roots 15:14
  7. EMS / Getgetto 19:03
  8. Silicon Scally / All Torque 22:36
  9. Freezie Freekie / Freezie’s Gonna Funk Ya 27:42
  10. The Octagon Man / 10ft Bass 31:15
  11. Eon / Phaze Test (String Phase) 34:38
  12. Treen / Cox 39:30
  13. Robert Cosmic / My Universe 43:18
  14. Sbassship / Four Dimensional Existence 47:45
  15. Mobile Space Unit / Penalty Dream Pt. 1 51:43
  16. M3taN01a / 3 Points 56:21
  17. Cabaret Voltaire / Exterminating Angel (Outro) 58:15

And here’s a link to the recording: https://archives.anonradio.net/202004100600_cev.mp3 with thanks to aNONradio for hosting the archives.

Three tracks from the mid-2000s electro label Satamile feature in this mix: #7 Getgetto by E.M.S., #8 All Torque by Silicon Scally, and #9 Freezie’s Gonna Funk Ya by Freezie Freekie. I picked up all three of those on vinyl in the mid 2000s in local shops. I’m a fan of Satamile; I miss their style of break-y electro, there doesn’t seem to be much of that being released right now.

Two old Electron Industries tracks feature, right after the Satamile block. #10 10ft Bass by label head The Octagon Man (AKA J. Saul Kane) and #11 Phaze Test (String Phase) by Eon. Phaze Test in particular is excellent, both sides are raucous electro workouts. The 30 Beat Cycle mix on the b-side is exactly as the title suggests, 28 beats in straight 4/4 then an extra two beats to mess with you. Fun and challenging to play in a set.

Mobile Space Unit is Pino Grzybowsky (AKA Dr. Scissors) and Andreas Kauffelt. Kauffelt was a member of Kabuto who wrote No Brain, a track wich appears on the first Ghost In The Shell Tribute album, and was played on this show five weeks ago. (A neat connection). Their track in this mix is the classic Penalty Dream Pt. 1, originally from the 1999 Cheat Codes EP on Electrolux, included here from the Elektro Codes.Three compilation.

This was a good one. A bunch of old vinyl and a few new(ish)-to-me pieces from Kerr KnollM3taN01a, and Robert Cosmic. Fun times. I’ve run out of ideas for new shows, so I’ve got no idea what to do next week, but I’ll do my best to make it good

MTT 153 / Dispersed Being

100 BPM beats for a tired Thursday night. This mix includes one F-bomb at the 30 minute mark, during Viktor Vaughn (MF Doom)’s rap. I guess that makes this one PG-13. Consider your surroundings when listening. (In other words: may or may not be appropriate for work. Depends on where you work.)

Here’s the tracklist:

  1. Mikron / Embers 00:00
  2. Ben Businovski / Re-evaluation 04:30
  3. Seal Bient / Structure Of Phantoms 07:26
  4. Reedale Rise / X-K 09:53
  5. Boards Of Canada / In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country 13:00
  6. Depeche Mode / Cover Me (Alt Out) 16:30
  7. Takeshi Muto / Muto Love 19:47
  8. Push Button Objects / Striffle 23:06
  9. Prefuse 73 / Point To B 26:23
  10. Viktor Vaughn / Raedawn 29:03
  11. Aaron Spectre / Voices 31:38
  12. Mikron / Aldergrove 35:55
  13. Secret Frequency Crew / Ghost In The Bayou 39:43
  14. Funky Technicians / Ninja (Essence Of Time Remix) 42:32
  15. Lionrock / Rock Steady Romance 44:49
  16. Tipper / Minimal Thoughts Of Reason 48:35
  17. T.Power / Postcards From Pluto 51:12
  18. Aroma Nice / Lo 56:34

and here’s the recording: https://archives.anonradio.net/202001310600_cev.mp3.

Two tracks by Mikron feature in this mix: #1 Embers and #12 Aldergrove. Both are from the excellent album Severance on CPU Records. Severance is a nicely varied album, slower in tempo than is typical for electro, more relaxed. It works well as an album, too: I’m happy listening to it straight through, beginning to end. Thumbs up for Severance, give it a listen at the link above.

Another standout here is Muto Love by Takeshi Muto from the Lily Of The Valley comp on Schematic. The rest of that comp is good too, and is definitely worth picking up. I’m sure I’ll be playing parts of it over the coming months.

Not too much more to say about this one; all these tracks are good. If something strikes your fancy here consider supporting the artist(s) at the links above. I’ll be back next week with something fast.
