fahrstuehle

An ornate illuminated sign with the German text "Fahrstühle", also incorporating a clock

“Fahrstuhl” (plural “Fahrstühle”) is one of two German words for elevator or lift, the other being “Aufzug”. This lovely specimen was found in the Hotel Reichshof, Hamburg, just across the street from the main railway station.

A large illuminated sign, supported by both an ornate wall bracket and chains from the ceiling. The text is “Fahrstühle” in an angular sans-serif lettering. The sign is surmounted by a clock. At far left the capital of a neoclassical column can be seen.
